The Best Nerdy Glasses for Your Boyfriend

“I want to get a pair of glasses like David Byrne has in the “Once in a Lifetime” music video,” my boyfriend said to me the other day.

If he only knew how long I had been waiting to hear those words come from a man’s lips.

I remember the first time I saw the “Once in a Lifetime” music video. I thought, “One day I want to date a man who dresses like a faux-evangelist.”

Little did I know those days were the beginning of my transformation into a hipster.

The David Byrne “Once in a Lifetime” glasses are not that dissimilar to the George McFly glasses. Another man I had a crush on as a child.

Needless to say you can tell why I’m so excited that my boyfriend want to get- eek, dare I say, hipster glasses.

See, this is the problem with cool glasses. If you want to wear vintage or unique glasses, you get labeled a hipster no matter what. Well, what if you just dig old glasses? What if you’ve wanted to wear old glasses ever since you were a little girl and you really don’t have to wear glasses but you do anyways? Does that make you a hipster? I guess it does. I guess I epitomize “hipster”, but shit, I mean, I’ve wanted to wear old glasses since I was like, 6. I longed to have bad eyesight when I was a little girl. Give me a break.

Anyway, this post is not about me and my 20/20 eyesight, it’s about how my boyfriend finally said the words I’ve want to hear.

Looking for vintage frames for my boyfriend is a task I take seriously. More seriously than he will ever know.

All the glasses below he likes.

Which one should he chose?

Oliver People’s The Sheldrake $300-$350

Oliver People’s Wacks $200-$300

Ray-Ban RX5154 $164.88

Tart Optical Arnel Blackwood $199

Ray-Ban RX5121 $134.88

Wary Parker Begley $95

Girl, have him go w/the Wacks. (Out of all of those.) Stars In Your Eyes on Congress has amazing stuff. Tell them I sent you. (NO really, tell them if he goes there.)

Only a few people can actually pull off David Byrne’s glasses (w/the plastic on top and the metal on the bottom) and the round ones on the bottom are sort of like the Ray Bans that aren’t very flattering on all face types. (One of my many old jobs was a frame stylist. I can also fix your glasses. Yup. Mad.Skills.Yo.)

Wacks all the way! Everyone looks great in them! Examples from a recent trip to NY (where my brother lives and wears Wacks): http://www.flickr.com/photos/tastytouring/sets/72157625001113958/

Jodi- love it! Those pics are too cute!

For the record, I don’t think Jodi’s brother’s glasses that are memorialized in the Nagypapa project are Wacks, they’re from Sol Moscot.

In related news, I’ve wanted these forever: http://urbanspectacles.com/

Also super intrigued by this new Warby Parker business.

I wear some unisex Tom Ford two tone glasses that remind me of the ones from the music video. i got them at Gene Rogers optical on Anderson Lane (in same shopping center as Alamo Drafthouse). they have a great collection of new and vintage frames. the couple who owns the shop are so sweet and great at what they do. the frames i bought were a pair that the lady pulled for me bc she thought they’d fit my face well. if not i would have never noticed them. but they were perfect and i get so many compliments. u should check it out! =) i think there is a coupon on yelp too. good luck!

I’m partial to the Ray-Ban RX5121, but that may be because I wear Ray-Bans myself.

Nice. Do you wear that specific model?

I think a lot of people vote for the Warby Parker. Thanks for the input!

I think the Tarts are pretty bad ass.

I went through the same problem. Frame searching is a big deal. Ultimately, the only frames that matched my personality and face were hipster frames.
    Damn. I hate myself sometimes.
But I like this the best.

      Embrace it.

The Ray-Ban 5154’s are what I wear (yes, even though they’re for men), and they bring me much enjoyment. But for your BF, I say the last pair!

Good for you, girl! I like your style!

I think the Wary Parker Begley’s are good for someone who slicks their hair back. Otherwise I’m a rayban man all the way.

The other day, I talked to the most hardcore hipster I’ve ever seen in Crown Heights. He’s a super tall Jamaican dude who took home 3D glasses from a movie theater and popped out the lenses. I complimented him with the reverence he deserved.
