Learning Secrets Turns 8 Years Old!

One of my face event throwers/DJs/all ’round cool dudes, Learning Secrets, is turning 8 years old this year. Can you believe it? 8 is the age of a freakin’ 2nd grader! I think. Right? Aren’t we 8 in second grade?

Anyways, they’re planning a big event to celebrate and you should go. Here are the deets:

On Saturday, January 28th our little party is turning 8 years old! We’re going to announce the full line up in a couple of weeks, but we wanted to make sure that since you’ve been a huge supporter for years, that you get a chance at some super discounted tix!

You know we like to go big for anniversarys. Pat Mahoney from LCD Soundsystem and Andy Butler from Hercules & Love Affair DJed a few years ago. We flew in Classixx and Woolfy for their first time in Austin, and last year we brought back old favorite Tim Sweeney and introduced everybody to the LA band Kisses. This year we’re flying in a band from NYC that we’re huge fans of, as well as two local bands destined to have a (more…)

I’d Gladly Stare at a Poster of a Shirtless Meatloaf

Indie-ignorant and proud: What it looks like to love the musical eras of yesteryear

01.06.12 | 04:00 pm

I have no idea what new music is out there right now. I have the freakin’ pen-name “Hipstercrite,” and I have no idea what people my age are listening to.

I am no hipster, I’m an old lady.

Cherishing my Time-Life 1950’s compilations on tape is what I do best. Loving Meatloaf is what I do even better. I still long for the days when I would wistfully stare at a poster of a shirtless Elton John (don’t ask). I’d probably stare at a poster of a shirtless Meatloaf and enjoy that too. I still have my Stevie Nicks costumes.

I even called Callin’ Oates; when my boyfriend got sick of hearing Daryl Hall crooning from my speaker phone, I was reduced to getting my fix of H2O in the car.

It’s Free Week in Austin, and you know what I’m doing right now instead of catching awesome local acts? Writing this post about how I’m indie ignorant.

I’d love to be in the know (more…)

Hipstercrite Round-Up: Bitches Be Crazy Edition

  • (music) Did you know that Talking Heads has a new documentary called “Chronology” out? Yeah, neither did. That one kind of slipped under the rug. NPR gives you a first look at the new doc that chronnicles the band’s live performances from their early days playing at CBGB’s all the way up to the last time they played as a foursome at the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. The film is available on Amazon for $19.99 (NPR All Songs Considered)
  • (music) All aboard the P.P. Love Letter (@Monbud came up with that one,  I’m not that funny)! R. Kelly has got himself a cruise ship. He’s going to sing to you on that cruise ship. Then he’s going to lock everyone in the closet. This premise sounds like the beginning of a snuff film. (A.V. Club)
  • (film) Ever wonder what the hell happened to Mike Myers? Well your fears of what he could have possibly been doing during that time of isolation is true: he’s making an Austin Powers musical. Goes to show that even comic geniuses run out of (more…)

Can Musicians Be Artists Too?

source

I have a Google Alerts set up for David Byrne.

Unfortunately, a lot of people on this planet are named David Byrne.

Sometimes I am alerted of news stories about David Byrne the musician.

Like about how the soundtrack for “This Must be the Place” has been released, even though the movie hasn’t been released yet because it supposedly sucks ass. It upsets me that something named after the greatest song on the planet can supposedly suck butt so badly.

Most of the alerts are crap, but once in a blue moon I get an interesting story about David Byrne in my inbox. One that caught my attention recently was from the Spectator Arts Blog (an UK publication) and titled “An Inflated Sense of Their Own Artistry“. In it, the writer, Niru Ratnam, lambasts musicians like David Byrne, Ron Wood, Iggy Pop and David Bowie for- get ready for it- making art!

Imagine for a moment the following grouping: David Bowie, the former Clash bass player Paul Simonon, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie (more…)

Songs About Los Angeles

Last night I saw the movie Drive starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman and Los Angeles. A lot of buzz has been going around about this simple, yet visually and auditorily delicious film. The Michael Mann-esque qualities, Ryan Gosling’s subtle performance, the 80’s font, and moody electronic music make for a wonderful, nostalgic ride. Besides the ridiculously long shots on Ryan Gosling’s beautiful face, what made this film particularly engaging is the ominous soundtrack composed by Cliff Martinez and featuring music by Kavinsky, Lovefoxxx, Desire, College, Riz Ortolani, and Chromatics.

“Drive” is an appropriate verb for songs reminiscent of Los Angeles. Any song that reminds me of that city, also reminds me of late nights driving through Hollywood towards the beach, the blur of lights in the background, the windows down and the warm wind holding me firmly into the passenger seat. It reminds me of trips through the city to nowhere in particular, (more…)

The Driver Says…

“It’s time for Hipster Halloween Costume ideas again, you guys!”

If you’re not sure what hipstery Halloween costume you’ll be wearing this year, check out my post over at CultureMap for some ideas…

____

Halloween is just around the bend. For us hipsters, this is the cherished time of year where we can emulate our heroes or be ironic without people looking at us like we’re huge assholes.

But it’s also a challenging time. More than any other time of the year, we want to be different, irreverent. We have to out-do our peers. We can’t just walk into one of those big box Halloween stores and buy some cheap-o costume, nooo. We have to sit and think for days on what will be the most unique, most stylish, most mother f’ing hip costume Austin will ever see. We scavenge the vintage shops for just the right items. We spend hours putting our costume together nearly exploding from anticipation. Halloween arrives and we make our grand debut at a friend’s East Side party sporting our jean (more…)

Bleached Secrets

One of the features I wanted to add to the new Hipstercrite is writing about Austin events I’m excited about. Now, I’m not going to turn into a nightlife or scenester blog. I’m way too lame for that.  However, there are some pretty cool people doing some pretty cool things around here and I want to help share their special-ness. So every now and then you’ll see a post promoting something that I feel is Hipstercritey.

This Wednesday two of my favorite local creative endeavors Learning Secrets and Bleach Online are throwing a shindig for the release of Bleach’s “Wild Mint” issue. The festivities will take place at 29th Street Ballroom 9PM and feature Los Angeles DJ/music producer duo Poolside , Austin’s very own 1950’s shoegazey Boy’s Life, DJ sets by Learning Secrets and a very very very special guest. They’re so special, they deserve three “verys”.

Tix are $5

RSVP here.

Hope to see you there!

Looking to Songs for Answers

Tonight I saw Arcade Fire, a band I affixed great emotional significance to a long time ago. I recall lonely nights of drinking to, jerking off to, or crying to their first album Funeral. Of thinking that the swell in each song would carry me away to the place I was meant to be at. At 21 years of age and meandering into adulthood, their gospel held truths that I was meant to study and adhere to. When Neon Bible came out, it was the same thing. An organ meant proclamation. Of what? I’m not sure. Either way they were the gateway to the beginning of it all. Or so I thought.

So tonight, in a large field in the middle of Austin, I closed my eyes and tried to stir the nostalgia for a time I looked to songs for answers, but it just wasn’t coming. I closed my eyes more tightly and concentrated as hard as I could. I kicked the dirt over the memories of lying on my bedroom floor hitting repeat on “Rebellion (Lie)” thinking that eventually the song might make me burst into a million tiny pieces. (more…)
