Stylish Bicycle Helmets for the Hipster Cyclist in Your Life

Sometimes I have ideas.

One of these ideas was to make fashionable bike helmets.

I wanted to make fashionable bike helmets to a.) encourage people to actually wear helmets and b.) feel like winner while wearing a bike helmet.

Let’s face it, bike helmets aren’t the snazziest style accessory one can wear. They’re big, plasticy and make you look like a big doofus.

Since I’m not business savvy and I have no idea how to make helmets or sell them, I’ve found hip bike helmets that other people made. People who realized their dreams of making bike helmets; people who make me feel like a loser.

Yo, this is a good holiday gift for the biker in your family. Especially if you don’t want them to die.

These helmets are all really expensive, but you can’t put a price on cyclist fashion, ya know?

Top Ten Reasons I’m Excited H&M is Opening in Austin

Holy Mother of God! H&M is opening in Austin this Saturday 11/17 at The Domain.

Here are the top ten reasons why I’m so f’ing excited:

1.) Located at The Domain, we will be as far away from the “F1 people” as possible.

2.) I can finally feel good about my tax money going towards the construction of the monstrosity known as The Domain.

3.) I can stop feeling culturally inferior to my friends in NYC and LA.

4.) Since H&M will be located closer to the Ikea in Round Rock, we can propose to the city that we have an annual “Happy Swedish Products in America Day” and take the day off to get lost in both stores.

5.) We no longer have to start hyperventilating when we come across a rare, used H&M clothing item at one of Austin’s thrift or vintage stores.

6.) With over 24,000 square feet and two stories of retail space, it will be easier for me to hide behind a row of clothing and get locked in the store overnight.

7.) We no longer have to carry an extra empty (more…)

Winner of the Vinca Jewelry Giveaway, I Wear Chest Hair on My Face For You

Sorry for the delay in announcing the winner of the Vinca mustache jewelry giveaway!

Yesterday I was feeling just too damn lazy to record a video of myself. Yesterday I spent the day watching puppy and kitten videos.

I was kind of feeling lazy today too, so I will warn you that in this video I:

a.) Just got out of bed, therefore have no makeup on to cover up the circles of darkness under my allergy-riddled eyes

b.) Didn’t brush my teeth, but luckily you can’t smell my breath through the video

c.) Wear chest hair on my face

I do not wake up with chest hair on my face. I spirit gummed the living shit out of the chest hair and stuck it to my face. This means I will have glossy glue patches on my chin for the rest of the day, but you’re worth it.

If you’re the winner of the giveaway, please shoot me an email at laurenmodery at gmail dot com!

I wish I could give you all the gift of mustaches, but I will be having more giveaways soon! Also, Vinca’s jewelry is super affordable (more…)

What I Wore Today: Tacky Christmas Sweater Tee

This is my second “What I Wore Today” post this week, deal with it.

My brain has been a big pile of mush as of lately so the best I can do is post pictures, write short paragraphs and watch squirrels play in the yard.

However, this is a very special “What I Wore Today” post because I’m wearing a kick-ass t-shirt from New Orleans t-shirt company, Skip N’ Whistle.

I’m a big fan of their “Tacky X-mas Sweater T-Shirt” series, which is currently for sale on Fab.

My tee has dancing reindeer on it, but other shirts include prancing cats, dinoasaurs and combative unicorns.

HOW MANY SHIRTS DO YOU HAVE WITH COMBATIVE UNICORNS ON IT, HUH?

I bet you NONE!

Since “fall is hotter than balls” (Austin’s new official city slogan), I’m digging that I don’t actually have to wear a tacky X-mas sweater to wear a tacky X-mas sweater in the holiday season.

On a side note, I suck MAJOR ASS as taking selfsies. How the hell do you teenyboppers do it? It took me hours to get a shot that I liked (more…)

When Steampunk Lighting Gives You a Cotton Gin-Sized Boner

Whoa.

Election parties, tequila and allergy headaches DO NOT mix.

I have no idea what year it is, let alone what day.

Did Kennedy end up winning last night?

While I try to discern what planet I’m on, the best post I can write today is one about how I love lamp.

Sometimes I even love more than one lamp.

Particularly old-timey ones.

You know, that steampunk shit you see popping up in the 1920s Parisian-themed bathrooms of the new gastropubs in town?

Ohhhh man, do I get a cotton gin-sized boner for this stuff.

Check out some neat-o lighting I found for sale, including discounted fixtures at the Scoutmob Shoppe and some neat-o objects made by Geoff’s uncle up in Dallas.

I want to buy them alllllllll and make my house look like Nikola Tesla’s lab.

What I Wore Today: Election Day Edition

Today is Election Day!

The Instagrams has been all aflutter with photos of long voting lines, “I voted stickers” and Election Day outfits today. Even Lena Dunham has implored with us to share our voting ensembles with her. It’s been a very exciting day in the world of social media.

I feel a little left out today. You see, I’m registered in another state and very boringly sent in my absentee ballot a few weeks ago.

Luckily I took a picture so I can share with you my “Sending in My Absentee Ballot Day” outfit with you!

It also happens to be the outfit I’m wearing today (and tomorrow).

What I wore:
Top: a “vintage” baseball t-shirt found at the bottom of a clothing pile in the backyard of American Apparel $0
Bottom: the California Fleece Slim Fit Pant from American Apparel $36
Shoes: Keen flip flops given to me at an event involving popsicles $0
Hair: Hard water and shampoo
Makeup: Bare Essentials, allergies
Mood: Simultaneously proud and defeated. Proud that (more…)

Giveaway: Mustache-Themed Jewelry by Austin Designer Vinca!

Today is Election Day!

I voted. If my lazy ass can vote, then your lazy ass can definitely vote too.

Even my 85 year-old non-lazy ass grandmother voted today! Yay right-exercising grandmas!

You’re probably going to be inundated with election news stories and blog posts today. To break up the monotony and to prevent yourself from turning into a small, crying red-headed child who mistakenly calls the POTUS an untrained horse, this post is not only going to be an election-free post (except for the little blurb written before this), it’s also going to be a gift-giving post.

In honor of the month o’ the ‘stache (and prostates), I’m having a mustache-themed jewelry giveaway from my favorite Austin jeweler, Vinca.

If you’re not familiar with Vinca, it is about to become your new favorite thing. Adorably creative laser-cut jewelry designed and produced by a team of kick-ass Austinwomen? Yes, please!

This booming company has been featured in Seventeen Magazine, Redbook and Fab.com (more…)

How to Make A Pumpkin Look Like Your Favorite Pop Culture Hero

I’ve created for you pumpkin stencils of Frank Zappa, Pee-Wee Herman and Ryan Gosling, and by “I”, I mean, I started creating in Photoshop and then got extraordinarily frustrated to the point where I had to prevent myself from spitting at the computer in a fit of rage and then asked my boyfriend to finish for me with the promise of buying him lunch.

If you click on the image, then click on it again, it will be a nice large file for you to print and use!

Happy Halloween!

Hipster Halloween Costume Ideas For the Hipsters in All of You

I have NO clue what to be for Halloween.

Halloween is my favorite holiday and the amount of stress I put on myself to have a good time and a GREAT costume, always leaves me full of anxiety and agita.

Now that I have a boyfriend, we’ve discussed going as one of those annoying couples who do a Halloween costume set, but we can’t think of anything. Well, Geoff thought of something, but I’m not sure I’m on board with it yet. He wants all of his friends to be a part of a “Star Wars pun” costume collection including: Hans Solo (Han Solo dressed in lederhosen), Prince as Leia (exactly what it sounds like), Uncle Ben Kenobi (that one got left on the cutting room floor) and Jewbacca (Chewbacca with a yamaka). Though I appreciate my boyfriend’s creative ideas, I’m a.) not a fan of Star Wars (YOU HEARD ME!) and b.) the costume I was assigned, Prince as Leia, requires me not only to find a Princess Leia costume, but a Prince costume and that is way too much work and money. Typically being more (more…)

Adorable Hipster Animal Drawings Illustrate the Hipness of East Austin

Two days ago I was stuffing my pie hole at Another Broken Egg Cafe (if you haven’t been to this one-part indulgent, one-part healthy Southern comfort food spot, it’s worth checking out!) when I noticed a bunch of animals dressed as hipsters on the wall. Of course this would catch my attention. Of course.

How can a bunch of cutesy hipster animals not catch your attention? Huh? HUH?! If they don’t catch your eye, then a piece of you has died!

The collection, done in scratchboard style by a local artist named Janis, is called “Eastside Zoo” in honor of the hipster animals of East Austin. At the Eastside Zoo, we have cats with Texas tattoos, frogs drinking Lone Star and armadillos DJing.

I’d like to think of myself as the raccoon with a flannel.

Reprints of Janis’ work are for sale for $20 on her Etsy page Creative Scratchings.

They’re kind of awesome.
