Write a Blog Post or Hunt Down Breakfast Tacos?

Write blog post or hunt down breakfast tacos? This is the question I’m currently left grappling with.

Which one will satisfy me the most? Completing my personal goal of blogging daily, a goal I vowed to take seriously, or filling my empty stomach with delicious cheesey-carbohyratey goodness?

I could possibly do both before 12PM, my personal cut off time for submitting a blog post to my blog, but with my frustratingly slow writing execution abilities and that the fact that the closest breakfast taco place is roughly a 15 minute round trip drive from my house, I’m not sure I could satiate both wishes.

Considering I’m writing this now, it appears that I’ve chosen the former desire, writing a blog post, as I’ve decided that my stomach can sustain another hour of being hungry. The weak store brand breakfast blend coffee is helping subside any really longing pains, but the thought of half-soggy, half-crisp tortilla strips jaggedly sticking out of an egg/tomato/cheese blend known as the Migas taco is making it extremely difficult for me to continue writing.

I will most likely post this blog post in 30-40 minutes which means it will be very close to 12PM and I will no longer want to eat a breakfast taco. I’m watching my breakfast taco window closing more and more as I write this. By 12PM I will want something more lunch-oriented, say like a sandwich or sushi roll. This will happen day in and day out as I choose blogging over eating and that big, beautiful breakfast taco that I wake up thinking about most mornings will forever be pushed aside.

The breakfast taco was something I was not familiar with before moving to Austin. In Upstate New York, Mexican food is a anomaly; Taco Bell is enjoyed by thousands of white people who think they are eating true Mexican food. Five years in Los Angeles also didn’t introduce me to the food wonder either. I feel that LA doesn’t celebrate its Mexican culture and cuisine like Austin does. There is great pride in the breakfast taco here, one that hipsters gladly show in examples of b-fast taco tattoos and bumper stickers. Having grown up in New York and of Jewish decent, the prized breakfast food item has always been The Bagel with Cream Cheese, but alas, it is a rarity in Austin. Since a good bagel with cream cheese is difficult to find, I’ve sadly bumped it down a few spots on my list of desirable breakfast items to eat in the morning. The breakfast taco has trumped the bagel with cream cheese simply because it is common; one would be hard-pressed not to find a breakfast taco within a half a mile of their home.

I’m told that the breakfast tacos I enjoy are not real breakfast tacos., i.e. I’m not a fan of the authentic Tex-Mex places that Austin boasts. Tex-Mex cuisine, full of cheese, beans and tortillas, is not a diet my internal organs often appreciates, for it rests like a a palate of bricks on top of my stomach. Instead I like what falls under the broad term of “Interior Mexican” or separately, a healthier version of Tex-Mex where veggies, natural meats or non-meats are available options. This isn’t out of snobbery, but only what my gut can handle.

It is 11:30AM and as I watch the hazy image of a Migas taco retreat to the background of my mind, I figure I should wrap this post up and get ready to eat lunch.

Maybe one of these days the breakfast taco and I will meet again.

They don’t have breakfast tacos in other parts of our country? I don’t even know what to say. What holds together the most tasty foods in the AM hours? Do they pile eggs, tomatoes and bacon onto toast? I’m rooting for you Lauren. You and breakfast taco shall meet again, and it will be glorious.

Also, you have way more commitment than I. I always choose food.

They probably have breakfast tacos in other parts of the country, but Austin really is the place for b-fast tacos. It should be on the city flag.

Polvos on South First has a really good compromise between Tex-Mex and Interior Mexican. But you probably know that already.

They call them breakfast burritos at McDonald’s (yes I know) in other parts of the country, but yes they exist outside of Austin.
